"buddha" literally means awake

“Bodhi,” which related to “buddha,” literally means “awake.” “Chitta” is a Sanskrit word meaning “heart,” or occasionally, “essence.” So “bodhichitta” is the essence of the buddha, the essence of the awakened ones.
